Can I use insurance for past visits?

Understanding Insurance Coverage for Previous Appointments

Updated this week

No, insurance cannot be applied retroactively to past visits. To use insurance for your sessions, your coverage must be verified and active before the appointment takes place. This is a requirement set by insurance companies—not DreamCloud—and is based on their rules for eligibility, claim submission, and medical documentation. If a visit was completed without prior authorization or insurance verification, it will not be covered.

In addition, if you were seen under our Direct Primary Care (DPC) membership model, those monthly fees are not eligible for insurance reimbursement and are non-refundable. Insurance companies do not recognize DPC memberships because they do not bill per visit or per service. Instead, DPC plans provide bundled care—including unlimited follow-ups, direct messaging with your provider, medication management, and administrative support—all of which fall outside the traditional fee-for-service model used by insurance.

Even if you did not use all services included in your DPC membership during a given month, the membership grants ongoing access to care—similar to how a gym membership works. Because of this structure, insurance carriers will not reimburse or retroactively cover services received under a DPC plan.

If you’re unsure whether to use insurance or stay on a monthly plan, we’re happy to help you decide what’s best for your needs and budget.
